But through it all, he saw the potential impact of our organizations stymied by the status quo. He created SECTORLAB to do something about it. To realize the true potential that we claim the arts can have in our society.

Over the past 15 years, Jim Sector has built brands, broken attendance records, and developed industry-leading innovations at organizations across the arts & cultural sector. In 2023, Jim founded SECTORLAB, a consultancy focused on helping performing arts organizations develop new and innovative ways to grow audiences today.

EXPERIENCE: I’ve worked in the US and abroad, across disciplines and genres, and with organizations with budgets ranging from under $1M to over $50M. I’ve been both in the trenches and in the boardrooms, equally adept at hard-nose analysis and thoughtful blue-sky thinking.

EXPERIMENTER: I innovated "Netflix-style" subscription/membership programs at a “big five” orchestra and led the effort to achieve the “youngest audience of any orchestra in the country.” I’m engaged in R&D on an ongoing basis, rather than waiting for a particular project. That means I bring more to an engagement.

OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE: I look outside the arts in developing solutions, rather than the “industry bubble” that tends to echo back the same ideas over and over.
